Medicare and Travel: What's Covered (and What's Not)
Whether you're heading somewhere warm for the winter or finally taking that trip to Champagne, it's worth knowing how your Medicare coverage holds up when you're away from home.
Traveling Within the U.S.
Coverage is generally straightforward for domestic travel:
Original Medicare works with any provider that accepts Medicare, nationwide.
Medicare Advantage may have network restrictions depending on your plan — worth checking before you go, especially for extended stays.
Medigap (Medicare Supplement): There is no network. Medigap provides the same coverage nationwide.
If you travel frequently or spend significant time in another state, plan flexibility matters. Some plans are better suited for that lifestyle than others.
Traveling Internationally
This is where coverage gets limited. Most Medicare plans offer little to no coverage outside the U.S.
There are a few exceptions:
Emergencies near U.S. borders
Certain cruise situations
Some plans include limited foreign travel emergency benefits — check yours specifically
For Medigap holders: some plans cover emergency care abroad, typically reimbursing up to 80% of costs after you've paid out of pocket and submitted documentation.
What to Consider Before You Go
A few questions worth answering before you pack:
Does your plan include any international emergency coverage?
Do you need travel medical insurance? (TruLync advisors can help with this.)
Does your plan require you to notify your insurer before traveling out of state to activate your travel benefit? This step varies by plan and carrier — missing it can affect your coverage.
A Note on Snowbirds
If you split time between states each year, your plan choice matters more than you might think. A plan with a strong network in Minnesota may not serve you as well in Arizona. It's worth a conversation before your next season.
