Alphabet Soup: Understanding Medicare Parts A, B, C & D
Breaking down Medicare one letter at a time.
Parts A, B, C, D — it's a lot to take in. But once you understand what each part covers, it starts to make sense. Here's a plain-language breakdown.
Part A: Hospital Coverage
Think of Part A as your hospital insurance.
It typically covers:
Inpatient hospital stays
Skilled nursing facility care
Hospice care
Some home health services
Many people qualify for premium-free Part A, depending on their work history.
Part B: Medical Coverage
Part B covers everyday medical care — the services you use to stay healthy.
This includes:
Doctor visits
Preventive services (screenings, vaccines)
Outpatient care
Durable medical equipment
Part B comes with a monthly premium, and enrollment timing matters to avoid penalties.
Part C: Medicare Advantage
Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits.
These plans are offered by private insurance companies and typically include:
Everything in Parts A and B
Often prescription drug coverage
Extra benefits like dental, vision, or fitness programs
They can be a good fit for people who prefer an all-in-one plan.
Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage
Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications.
Plans vary in:
Which drugs are covered (formularies)
Monthly premiums
Pharmacy networks
Even if you don't take many prescriptions today, having coverage in place protects you from higher costs later.
How It All Fits Together
At a high level, you have two main paths:
Option 1: Original Medicare (Parts A & B) + optional supplement (Medigap) + Part D
Option 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C), which bundles Parts A, B, and often D
Both have trade-offs, and which one makes sense depends on your doctors, your medications, how much you travel, and your budget.
